Philippines to buy BrahMos Missiles, signed $375 million deal

On Friday, India and the Philippines will sign a USD 375 million deal for the delivery of BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles to the Philippines Navy, a substantial boost to the country's defense growth. According to government sources, the Philippines' senior defense brass would be present at the event. During the huge defense agreement, India will be represented by its ambassador.

“The Philippines had accepted BrahMos Aerospace's export-order proposal to provide supersonic cruise missiles for its navy earlier this month. The major deal worth was communicated to India through a Notice of Award by the Philippines Department of National Defence, signed by Secretary Delfinn Lorenzana. The order directed BrahMos Aerospace to provide the supply of the Shore-based Anti-ship Missile System within ten calendar days of receiving the order”.

The purchase with the Philippines is part of India's'made-in-India defense weapons initiative. The claimed order would be the country's largest in the field, as the DRDO received orders for weapons finding radars from the Armenian government. Meanwhile, India is anticipated to receive more orders from "friendly states" in the near future, as talks between New Delhi and Washington have progressed.

With the addition of new technologies and increased range, the missile's credibility has grown. According to sources, BrahMos Chief Atul Dinkar Rane has been working hard to improve the missile system's indigenous content and increase its manufacturing base.

The BrahMos missile is a strong and important combat weapon that has been deployed on practically all Indian Navy surface units. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has a range of 290 kilometers and can travel at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0. Meanwhile, the BrahMos- II Hypersonic cruise missile, with a range of 450–600 km and a Mach 7 velocity, can be deployed to hit the target within a range of 450–600 km. The DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia are actively working on the missile together.
