BJP Wins Azamgarh & Rampur Lok Sabha Seats in UP bypolls

BJP exerted its political dominance in UP by winning the Azamgarh and Rampur Lok Sabha seats in the bypoll election. BJP Ghanshyam Lodhi defeated SP's Mohd Asim Raja from Rampur Lok Sabha constituency by a stellar margin of over 40,000 votes. BJP's Dinesh Lal Yadav defeated SP's Dharmendra Yadav by 8,679 votes. The BJP candidate got 3,12,768 votes, while the SP candidate got 3,04,089 votes.

Both Azamgarh and Rampur have long been considered as SP strongholds therefore this win by BJP became a major blow to SP's political ambitions,Both the seats were up for bypolls after the resignations of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and senior leader Azam Khan, respectively.

In Azamgarh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Shah Alam, who secured more than 2 lakh votes eating into Samajwadi Party's Dharmendra Yadav's vote base. While speaking to the media after his victory, Nirahua stated that he would credit the victory to the BJP's good policies and various groundwork schemes for the upliftment of the poor.

The defeated Samajwadi Party candidate for UP's Azamgarh by-poll, Dharmendra Yadav blamed the state administration and "BJP-BSP alliance" for his loss and said that the people of the district will again make them victorious in the 2024 General elections. SP's Azam Khan, who also faced defeat, commenting on his dismal electoral performance, stated that "neither this can be called an election nor the election results."

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to Twitter to congratulate the winning candidates by calling the party's electoral performance  as the success of the "double engine government." Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the winners by describing the Up bypoll win as "historic" and said that it indicated "wide-scale acceptance and support."

Apart from the commendable UP By poll performance, the BJP also  won three out of four seats in Tripura bypolls. The Tripura bypolls become much more newsworthy as  Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha emerged victorious in his first-ever direct electoral battle from the Town Bardowali constituency.
